FAQs About Audiologists and Audiometricians

What do you see an audiologist for?

Audiologists are healthcare professionals who focus on hearing and balance disorders. They are able to diagnose patients and propose tailored products and/or solutions to help them cope with their condition.

Signs that you should see an audiologist/audiometrician include:

  • You have tinnitus or hear ringing in your ears
  • You always turn up the volume of the TV
  • Your family complains of the TV being too loud
  • People lean closer to your ear to speak to you

What is the difference between an ear doctor (ENT) and an audiologist?

Both ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors and audiologists/audiometricians diagnose conditions related to the ear. However, the former goes into more advanced medical issues whereas the latter specialises in the diagnosis of hearing loss and using hearing aids to better one’s quality of life.

Additionally, ENT doctors also advise on nose and throat health.

What is the difference between an audiologist and audiometrician?

Both audiologists and audiometricians are hearing health specialists. The main difference lies in their job scope.

Audiometricians are skilled in conducting basic hearing tests and diagnosing hearing losses in adults. They may also provide suggestions and counselling on hearing amplification and fine-tune hearing devices, if necessary.

Audiologists have a slightly wider job scope. They manage both adult and paediatric cases, including newborns. They may also perform a greater range of tests other than pure tone audiometry to identify certain lesions or dysfunction in the auditory system. Besides hearing tests, audiologists can also perform vestibular tests to diagnose certain balance issues.

Can a GP refer you to an audiologist?

Yes, they can!

Do note that you must first be cleared of any other conditions that may require medical attention such as ear infections, injury to the ear, sudden hearing loss and so on. If you present any symptoms of the conditions mentioned, it is recommended that you first consult an ENT.
