Signs of Hearing Loss in Newborns and Children
While many newborns are born with normal hearing, it is important to recognise that hearing loss can develop gradually during infancy or childhood. Early detection is crucial, as it significantly impacts a child’s behaviour, speech and language development, and their overall communication and social skills.
Signs of hearing loss in children can vary widely as each case is unique, but common indicators include:
- Lack of response to sounds
- Lack of communication intent
- Inability to locate the source of sounds
- Delayed language development
- Failing to respond when their name is called
- Inattentiveness to conversations
- Watching or listening at unusually high volumes
- Talking loudly
If you suspect your infant or child has hearing loss, book an audiometry test today.

FAQs About Hearing Tests for Newborns and Children
Why does my newborn need a hearing test?
In Singapore, approximately one in 1,000 babies are born with significant hearing impairment. Each instance of hearing loss that is detected and treated appropriately can significantly minimise harmful effects on a child’s development, particularly in areas like speech and language. Thus, newborn hearing tests are crucial in detecting hearing issues early.
However, it is important to note that hearing loss can develop gradually due to factors such as recurrent ear infections, genetic predispositions, or chronic illnesses. As such, monitoring your childโs behaviour and hearing ability is crucial.
If you notice any changes that might indicate hearing loss, book an appointment for an audiometry test as quickly as possible.
Are certain children more likely to get hearing loss than others?
Certain children are more likely to experience hearing loss than others due to various risk factors including:
- Genetics: This includes a family history of hearing loss or genetic conditions such as Downโs Syndrome.
- Infections: Maternal infections during pregnancy or recurring middle ear infections in children lasting at least 3 months can increase the risk of hearing loss.
- Health conditions: Children who are born prematurely or have low birth weight (under 2,500 grams) are at an increased risk of hearing loss. Infants with severe jaundice requiring phototherapy are also at risk of developing hearing loss.
- Trauma: Children who have suffered a head injury with a fracture are more likely to suffer from hearing loss following the injury.
- Birth defects: Infants with craniofacial defects (e.g. Cleft Lip) are more likely to develop hearing loss.
Recognising these risk factors is crucial for early detection and intervention, which can significantly improve outcomes for affected children.
What are the early interventions available for children diagnosed with hearing loss?
These are some of the key options available for children diagnosed with hearing loss:
- Hearing aids
- Cochlear implants
- Speech-language therapy
Family support and education will also be offered to parents to provide them with the necessary resources and training to support their childrenโs speech and language development. This includes information on how to communicate effectively with their child, which fosters a supportive learning environment. Get in touch with our audiologists to find out more.
