In October 2024, Apple introduced a software update for the AirPods Pro 2, enabling them to function as over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. This innovative feature, designed for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, transforms these popular wireless earbuds into accessible hearing aid devices that are FDA-approved.
This article will explore the new AirPods Pro 2 hearing aid features, as well as their benefits and limitations. We will also share a step-by-step guide on how to set them up and discuss whether the AirPods Pro 2 can serve as a substitute for prescription hearing aids.
AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid Features
The AirPods Pro 2 offers three main functionalities: a built-in hearing test, an FDA-approved hearing aid capability, and a hearing protection feature.
Hearing test
The hearing test feature allows users to assess their hearing capabilities directly from their AirPods. The test parallels pure tone audiometry (PTA), in which sounds are presented at different frequencies and patients are asked to respond when they hear the tone (or in the case of Appleโs built-in hearing test, users are asked to tap the screen when they hear the tone). This measures the softest level of sounds, called the threshold, that users can hear at each frequency.
After completing the test, the results will be reflected immediately, showing the thresholds of each tested frequency and whether the user has hearing loss.
Hearing aid
With the hearing aid functionality, the AirPods Pro 2 uses your hearing test results and amplifies sound accordingly, making conversations and environmental noises clearer for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. Users can tailor their listening experience through adjustable settings for amplification, balance, and tone.ย
Additionally, the Conversation Boost feature enhances speech clarity by focusing on the person talking in front of the user, further improving communication in various settings.
Hearing protection
This feature reduces exposure to loud noises to protect hearing health. However, it is available only in select countries, including the United States (and associated islands) and Canada.
Benefits of AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid Features
The AirPods Pro 2 offers several advantages compared to prescription hearing aids, such as greater affordability, ease of purchase, and reduced stigma. Additionally, their Bluetooth connectivity enables seamless connectivity with other Apple devices for audio streaming and communication.
Affordable
At $349, the AirPods Pro 2 is significantly cheaper than prescription hearing aids. The price of prescription hearing aids typically starts from $1,090 (inclusive of GST).
Easy to purchase
The AirPods Pro 2 can be easily purchased online or in stores from Apple and authorised retailers, making them highly accessible.
Gateway to prescription hearing aids
Due to the stigma associated with hearing aids, some people may be hesitant to wear them. The AirPods Pro 2 offers an alternative solution that helps ease these individuals into using hearing devices.ย
Additionally, the convenience of the built-in hearing test feature can encourage people to take a hearing test and seek professional help when needed.
Disadvantages of AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid Features
While the AirPods Pro 2 offer an accessible and affordable way to address hearing loss, they have several limitations. Below, we explore some key drawbacks to consider before using them as a hearing aid alternative.
Reduced reliability of hearing testย
The hearing test conducted by the AirPods Pro 2 is generally less reliable than the tests done in a clinical setting. According to Benjamin Yeap, Audiologist at Hearing Partners, many factors such as environmental noise and the fit of the AirPods can impact the results. If the results are not accurate, the amplification provided will also be affected.
Not suitable for severe to profound hearing loss
As an OTC hearing aid, the AirPods Pro 2 is only suitable for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. Those with severe or profound hearing loss will still need prescription hearing aids from a hearing care professional.
Furthermore, even individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss may benefit from professional hearing care, according to Benjamin. Through a detailed examination, the audiologist may be able to uncover and treat the underlying cause of the hearing loss (e.g. ear infection) or refer you to a medical specialist who can help with your problem.ย

Limited battery life
With the hearing aid and noise cancelling features enabled, the AirPods Pro 2 can last about 5.5 โ 6 hours per charge. This is significantly shorter than rechargeable prescription hearing aids from brands such as Oticon, which last approximately 20 โ 24 hours on a single charge.
This limited battery life can pose a challenge for those using the AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids for the entire day. A mid-day charge would be necessary, leaving users without the device for approximately an hour (for a full charge) and interfering with their daily activities.
More visible than hearing aids
Unlike prescription hearing aids, which blend with skin tones and are designed to be discreet, the AirPods Pro 2 are larger and white in colour, making them more noticeable. Wearing them in social or professional settings, such as business meetings, may also be inappropriate or misinterpreted as rude.
Not suitable for all ears
AirPods may not fit comfortably in all ear shapes, particularly for individuals with narrow or irregular ear canals. A poor fit can lead to feedback issues and a poor listening experience. On the other hand, prescription hearing aids offer custom-moulded options, ensuring a perfect fit.
May cause occlusion
Occlusion occurs when the ear canal is partially or completely blocked, causing your own voice to sound muffled or hollow. The AirPods Pro 2 creates more occlusion compared to open-fit prescription hearing aids that allow low-frequency sounds to pass naturally.
Limited features
Compared to prescription hearing aids, the AirPods Pro 2 doesnโt come with advanced features like feedback reduction, wind noise suppression, and handling stabilisers. These additional features found in prescription hearing aids reduce listening effort and contribute to a more enjoyable listening experience.
Can only be used with a compatible Apple device
The hearing aid feature is only available on compatible Apple devices (iPhone or iPad), so Android users cannot enjoy these functionalities.
How to Use AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid Feature
In this section, we show you how to set up your AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids. Before you begin, ensure your device is updated to iOS 18.1 or later (go to Settings โ General โ Software Update).
Step 1: Open your device settings
To begin, connect your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad. Open the Settings app, and at the top of the list, tap on your AirPods to access their settings.
Step 2: Take the hearing test

Before taking the hearing test, ensure youโre in a quiet environment free from background noise, such as conversations or air conditioning sounds. Once you have found a suitable location, select โTake a Hearing Testโ from the menu. The test will begin by assessing background noise levels and checking the AirPods’ fit by playing a tone in your ears.
Next, youโll hear a series of beeps at different frequencies. Simply tap the screen whenever you hear a sound. Each ear is tested individually, and the entire process takes about five minutes.
Step 3: Receive your hearing test results

Once the test is complete, youโll receive an audiogram for each ear, showing your hearing sensitivity at different frequencies. These results are automatically stored in Apple Health, allowing for long-term tracking and comparison.
Additionally, if you have past professional audiograms, you can upload them for reference. This can be done by either scanning them using your camera or entering the details manually.
Step 4: Customise your AirPods sound

Based on your test results, AirPods will automatically adjust their settings to enhance your listening experience. You can further fine-tune the audio by adjusting volume, balance, ambient noise levels, and tone via the Adjustments menu or Control Panel.
AirPods also offer advanced features to improve clarity. Conversation Boost enhances speech by activating directional microphones, making it easier to hear people in noisy environments. Meanwhile, Swipe Controls allow you to adjust volume effortlessly by swiping on the AirPods while wearing them.
Can AirPods Pro 2 Substitute Prescription Hearing Aids?
The AirPods Pro 2 offers an innovative approach to hearing aids. At $349, this device is affordable and easily accessible compared to traditional prescription hearing aids. However, they have a few limitations, including a short battery life and a lack of advanced features found in prescription hearing aids. Furthermore, they can only be used by individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss.
Overall, while the AirPods Pro 2 provides an accessible alternative for those who are self-conscious or hesitant to get prescription hearing aids, they cannot fully replace them. Prescription hearing aids still provide a more well-rounded listening experience due to their advanced features and customisations.
